1) Ciao e benvenuti! Presentatevi ai nostri lettori!
Dan: Ciao, sono Dan e suono la chitarra e il basso e scrivo la maggior parte delle lyrics.
Lennon: Sono Len, il vocalist.
Evan: sono Evan e suono la batteria.
2) Perché avete scelto il nome "Hateful Transgression"?
Dan: è stato qualcosa che ho preso a caso, alcuni anni fa (2013) quando volevo iniziare un progetto solista mentre ero al college.
Suppongo che potrai dire che è un commento sulle cose malvage che le persone fanno agli altri durante le nostre vite giornaliere; ma non è pensato con questo significato, non dovrebbe essere letto in quest'ottica. Mi piaceva come suonava, malvagio e brutale, ma non il tipico "personaggio/farsi piccolo per la paura/nome misogino che le band violente includono. (Nota di Lunaria: non sono riuscita a tradurre più nello specifico questa frase usata dalla band "I just like how it sounds evil and brutal but not the typical cringe-worthy misogynist name that "insert slam band" uses." "Cringe-worthy" non esiste sul dizionario, ne deduco che sia un'espressione da slang; i due termini infatti sono separati, e peraltro "worthy" significa anche "meritevole, degno, onorevole, rispettabile" mentre ha, come significato ironico, "tipo, individuo, personaggio", mentre "cringe" significa "farsi piccolo per la paura, rannicchiarsi", "essere servile". Diventa pertanto impossibile dare un senso a questa espressione, che probabilmente è gergale. Difatti io non l'avevo mai sentita e neppure "cringe" che pure non è slang, non l'ho mai visto usato da altre band nei testi... in più, non sono neanche sicura che qui, con quello "slam", che significa "colpo violento" o "schiacciata" in riferimento al basket, non si intenda piuttosto la scena slam che conosco molto poco... e quindi la frase vada letta come un "abbiamo scelto un nome che ci differenzia dalle altre band slam che hanno nomi violenti")
3) Suonate un Brutal Death Metal molto originale e tecnico (ovviamente l'America è famosa per la sua scena Death metal, specialmente quella della Florida che ha fatto la storia del Death negli anni '90...) con un certo mood atmosferico tipico del Black Metal, che rende la vostra musica molto oscura e lenta, delle volte.
Dan: sono felice che ti sia piaciuto! è un sound originale che non molte band stanno sperimentando, ora come ora. Abbiamo registrato uno split con Jesus Wept e Martyrs of Necromancy a novembre 2016 e ambedue sono etichettate come "Blackened Slam". Sono un grande fan di quest genere di Slam e del Black Metal, così è naturale che combino i due stili.
Lennon: concordo, una delle ragioni per cui sono stato d'accordo nell'unirmi a questa band è stato perché c'era questo stile unico ed è un genere che nessuno ha mai fatto prima.
Evan: sono stato un fan del Black Metal per diverso tempo e l'influenza Black è parte di quello che mi ha allattato, di questa band, oltre che aver già lavorato con Dan in FVRLVRN.
4) Potete descrivere il vostro EP, "Hateful Transgression" (2015)?
La copertina mostra una vecchia casa fatiscente nei boschi... perché avete scelto questa immagine?
L'ho guardata e ho pensato: "Oh, solo un serial killer potrebbe vivere lì!"
Dan: la copertina è una cosa che ho voluto sperimentare. Volevo qualcosa di spaventoso e strano, ma non la solita immagine brutal.
Originariamente, l'immagine era stata pensata in modo che raffigurasse una figura coperta da un mantello, con un coltello e una clessidra, posizionata al centro, per esprimere il significato immediato della vita. (Nota di Lunaria: qui il termine usato è "immediacy" ma è inesistente sul dizionario; esiste "immediate")
Tuttavia, è andata a finire che ho rifiutato l'idea (nota di Lunaria: anche qui, "scrapping" letteralmente significa "raschiare, grattare") e sono andato avanti con qualcosa di più semplice.
Veramente, ho solo lanciato l'idea a Ryan (Cryptworm), l'artista che ha curato l'album, e lui se n'è uscito con una cosa molto spaventosa. è un artista fantastico e ha curato tutte le copertine dei nostri album e il merchandise.
5) Di cosa parlano le vostre liriche? Che argomenti trattate? Perché usate il francese, delle volte?
Lennon: Dan scrive la maggior parte dei testi.
Dan: le lyrics sul nostro EP del 2015 sono state scritte sia da me che dal nostro vecchio vocalist Frank che viene dai Paesi Bassi e parla diverse lingue. Abbiamo pensato che fosse fantastico sperimentare cantando con lingue differenti, e spero di poterlo fare in futuro, anche se Lennon parla solo inglese per quello che ne so.
Le lyrics dell'EP riguardano principalmente il disagio mentale
e anche troppo prolisse ed esagerate descrizioni di alcuni momenti della mia vita.
Per esempio, la canzone "Denied the Significance of Nothingness"
descrive il periodo della mia vita nel quale soffrivo di una fobia sociale, davvero pessima.
I testi delle canzoni parlano di malattia mentale, problemi sociali,
e altri temi ai quali sono interessato.
Il testo di "Inlev" colpisce violentemente i diritti e le autorizzazioni dell'elite e le disparità nella salute, nella popolazione.
"Vacuum of a Fence" è un gioco di parole che va letto come "Vacuum of Offense", dove esprimo il mio personale odio per la censura ideologica e l'elitismo liberale che si può trovare nei college e campus di "arti liberali". Questi sono solo alcuni dei temi su cui scrivo.
6) Penso che abbiate già suonato live. Sarebbe possibile vedervi anche in Europa, in Italia? Ci sono molti cultori del Brutal Death Metal qui...
Dan: il nostro piano sarebbe suonare dal vivo, al più presto. Tutti i nostri membri ora abitano negli USA e speriamo di iniziare a suonare tra un anno o due. Non sono sicuro se e quando suoneremo mai in Europa, ma se ce ne sarà l'occasione, ci piacerebbe visitare l'Italia. Ci sono stato già tre volte e l'adoro!
Evan: Amo l'idea di suonare dal vivo, e non lo considero solo uno scopo personale, ma un obiettivo per l'intera band.

2) Why have you chosen "Hateful Transgression" as a monicker?
Dan: It was really just something random I thought of a few years ago (c. 2013) when I wanted to start a solo project while I was in college. I guess you could say it's meant to be a commentary on the evil things that people do to others during our daily lives. It's not meant to be read into that much though. I just like how it sounds evil and brutal but not the typical cringe-worthy misogynist name that "insert slam band ____" uses.
3) You play a very original form of Brutal Death Metal, very technical (of course, America is famous for its Death Metal scene, expecially the great scene from Florida, who made the story of the Death Metal in the '90s...) and with some atmospherical mood in Black Metal's style, which makes your music very gloom, slowly and dark, sometimes.
Dan: I'm glad you like it! It's definitely an original sound that not many bands are experimenting with right now. We did a split with Jesus Wept and Martyrs of Necromancy back in November of 2016 and they are both dubbed also as "blackened slam". I am a huge fan of slam and black metal so it was only natural to attempt combining the two.
Lennon: I agree, one of the reasons why i agreed on joining this band was because it has such a unique style and it's a genre nobody has really done before.
Evan: I have been a very big fan of black metal for some time now and the black metal influence is part of what made the band so enticing to me, along with having already worked with Dan in FVRLVRN.
4) Can you describe your EP, "Hateful Transgression" (2015)? The cover artwork shows a creepy old house in the woods... Why have you chosen this image? I watch that image and I think "Oh, only a serial killer could live here!"
Dan: The cover was something that I was experimenting with for a while. I wanted something creepy and weird but not over the top brutal. The image originally was supposed to have a cloaked figure with a knife and an hourglass standing in the middle to sort of signify the immediacy of life. However, I ended up scrapping the idea and going with something more simple. Really I just pitched the idea to Ryan (Cryptworm), the album artist, and he came up with something creepy. He a fantastic artist and has done all of our album covers and merch.
5) And what about the lyrics? What are the argoments you are talking about? Why you use french language, sometimes?
Lennon: Dan writes most of the lyrics.
Dan: The lyrics on our 2015 EP were co-written by myself and our old vocalist Frank who is from the Netherlands and speaks several languages. We thought it would be cool to experiment with singing in different languages and I'd like to do that some in the future, although Lennon only speaks English as far as I'm aware. The lyrics for the EP were mainly about mental illness and overly verbose and exaggerated descriptions of times in my life. For example, the song "Denied the Significance of Nothingness" is about a time I had really bad social anxiety. The lyrics usually discuss themes of mental illness, social issues, and random themes that I'm interested in. The lyrics to the song "Inlev" lashes out against the entitlement of the elite and wealth disparities between populations. "Vacuum of a Fence" is a play on words that's read as "Vacuum of Offense" which discusses my personal hatred for ideological censorship and liberal elitism found on liberal arts college campuses. These are only some of the themes that I write about.
6) I suppose you have already played live... Should it be possibile, one day, see you here in Europe, maybe in Italy? There are a lots of Brutal Death metal lovers, here...
Dan: Our plan is to play live sometime soon. All of our members now reside in the US and we hope to start playing shows within a year or two. I am not sure if or when we will ever play live in Europe, but if we do we would love to hit Italy. I've been there three times and I loved it!
Evan: I would definitely love to play live someday, and consider it not only a personal goal, but a goal for the band as well.
