Ancestral Legacy (Gothic Dark Doom Metal)

1) Ciao e benvenuti! Presentatevi ai nostri lettori!

Ciao, sono Eddie Risdal, chitarrista e vocalist degli Ancestral Legacy, dalla Norvegia. Siamo in giro da molto tempo, ma alcuni cambiamenti di line up, uniti dal nostro paese di provenienza, ci hanno reso difficili il registrare album e le altre attività con la band, anche per lunghi periodi. Ma non ci stiamo piangendo addosso, stiamo continuando al meglio che possiamo, e siccome amiamo ciò che facciamo, non dovrebbero esserci problemi.


2) Perché avete scelto il monicker Ancestral Legacy?

è stato un insieme di coincidenze che ci hanno portato a scegliere questo nome. Io e un mio amico, nei primi anni '90 avevamo formato una band Black Metal, i Permafrost. Più tardi abbiamo aggiunto un tastierista, e la musica è proseguita in una direzione per la quale il nome non si addiceva più. Così un amico ci ha suggerito "Ancestral Legacy", ispirato da un testo dei Cradle of Filth, eheh. Si abbinava bene al genere di musica che suonavamo allora, un Symphonic Metal estremo. Non è quello che suoniamo oggi, ma il nome è azzeccato.


3) Suonate un mix tra l'Epic/Black Metal alla Dissection con un tocco gotico dato dalle female vocals, con tempi molto lenti alla My Dying Bride. Che ne pensate di questa mia descrizione? Voi come vi definireste?

Sì, non è una una cattiva definizione per descriverci a chi non ci ha mai sentito. I componenti della band hanno tutti gusti differenti, collettivamente ascoltiamo tutti i tipi di Metal, e anche molto non-Metal, e come le nostre canzoni "saltano fuori" riflette tutto questo, credo.
Mettere il termine "Femme metal" o simili, non è descrivere nessuna band che proponga musica, anche se c'è una donna nella line up della band.
La prima cosa che abbiamo sentito quando le persone leggevano in giro che avevamo una female vocalist è stata roba del tipo "ahah, suonate come i Nightwish o i Within Temptation?" E penso che onestamente abbiamo molto poco in comune con loro.
Entrambe sono, o sono state, buone bands, ma noi siamo più ispirati da band molto differenti. Citerei Novembre, Rapture, Opeth, Amorphis, The Gathering e Katatonia. Non il tipico "femme metal" che si crede. Noi ci definiamo "Gothic Dark Doom Metal con alcune influenze Black". Tu potresti dire che è molto diffuso, o che è molto ambiziosa, come idea, eheh. Ma stiamo ancora aspettando di trovare l'etichetta che definisca la nostra musica. Non che siamo unici, ma stiamo proponendo diversi generi con le nostre canzoni.


4) Potete parlarci della vostra biografia? Primi passi, demo...

Wow, è una lunga storia, ed è iniziata 20 anni fa... come dicevo, io e un mio amico abbiamo suonato in una band Black Metal chiamata "Permafrost". Non è accaduto molto in quegli anni, ma abbiamo fatto un pugno di canzoni, e la nostra ultima canzone era molto vicina a quello che stiamo facendo ora (era tutta strumentale: "Glimmer") e così abbiamo avuto alcune idee che abbiamo usato per altre canzoni. Così abbiamo cambiato nome in Ancestral Legacy, le cose sono diventate più serie, e abbiamo registrato il primo demo nel 2000 e il secondo nel 2002. Dopo questi demo, due membri della band se ne sono andati e sono rimasto l'unico, eheh. Così ho cercato e poi trovato nuovi membri tra il 2002 e il 2003, e abbiamo rilasciato altri due demo, nel 2003 e nel 2004. Nel 2005 il batterista ha lasciato la band, e questo ci ha reso inattivi per molto tempo. Fino al 2007 non c'è stata molta attività, poi abbiamo iniziato a registrare il nostro primo album "Nightmare Diaries", ma per altri dannati problemi, l'album non è stato rilasciato che nel 2010. Fortunatamente avevamo molte canzoni extra dalla precedente registrazione, e così abbiamo rilasciato un Ep autoprodotto nel 2008.


5) Di cosa parlano i vostri testi? Che argomenti trattate?

Ad essere onesti non sono molto pratico nello scrivere lyrics. Sono molto pignolo e critico, e credo che valga la pena di dover dire solo cose importanti. Ma essere una persona annoiata, vivere una vita noiosa, non c'è molto da raccontare, come esperienza. Così per le nostre canzoni abbiamo preso a prestito le esperienze di persone al di fuori della band, e penso che sia un'opzione migliore avere le esperienze personali di qualcuno che sia interessante, piuttosto di avere scritto cose insulse.
La nostra vocalist passata ha scritto il testo per una canzone, mentre la nostra attuale vocalist, Isidora, ha scritto le lyrics di "Terminal", come altre che abbiamo usato per le canzoni imminenti. Personalmente non mi interessa molto l'argomento dei testi, mi interessa di più che siano scritti bene e abbiano un mood che si coniuga con la musica.


6) Avete già suonato live?

Sì, il nostro primo concerto è stato nella nostra città natale Arendal, nel 2003, e da allora non abbiamo fatto molti altri concerti, ma ci sarebbo piaciuto farne di più. Finora abbiamo suonato in Germania, Paesi Bassi e Francia, oltre che in Norvegia. Comunque stiamo progettando di suonare questo autunno, in Europa.

1) Hello and welcome here! Let's introduce yourself!

Hi, I am Eddie Risdal, guitarist and vocalist in Ancestral Legacy from Norway. We have been around for quite some time actually, but much because of a lot of changes in the line-up, mixed with where we come from, have made it difficult to keep up the frequency of recordings and other activities within the band for long periods at a time. But we are not complaining, we just have to continue the best we can, as long as we love what we do it should be no problem.


2) Ancestral Legacy: why did you choose this monicker?

It is kind of coincidences that lead to this band name. Me and a friend started a black metal band back in the nineties, called "Permafrost". Later we added a guy on keyboards and the music developed in a direction where we no longer felt that name fit the music. So a friend of ours suggested "Ancestral Legacy" instead, inspired by some Cradle Of Filth lyric, he he. It fitted well for the kind of music we played then, some extreme symphonic metal. It is not quite what we play today, but somehow the name stuck and I don't hear anyone complain about it...


3) You play a musical mix about Epic/Black atmosphere (Dissection style) and the angelic Gothic touch of the female vocals with the dark slow times in My Dying Bride style. Are you agree? How should you call your sound?

Yeah that would not be a bad explanation to someone who have never heard us. The band members all have different taste in music, we collectively listen to most types of metal, and also much "non-metal" stuff, and how our songs turn out reflects this I guess. Putting the tag "femme metal" or the like is definitely not describing any band's music, other than the fact that there is at least one female member in the band. The first thing we get to hear when people learn that we have a female vocalist is stuff like "aha, you sound like Nightwish or Within Temptation?". And I can honestly say that we have very little in common with these two. Both are, or at least have been, good bands, but we are much more inspired by completely different kind of bands. I would pick bands like Novembre, Rapture, Opeth, Amorphis, The Gathering and Katatonia. Not your typical femme metal to put it that way. We usually tag ourselves "gothic dark doom metal with some black metal influences". You could say it is either very diffuse or ambitious, he he. Still we are waiting for the perfect tag describing out music. Not that we are very unique, more that we are visiting several genres with our songs.


4) Can you speak about the biography of the band? First steps, demos...

Wow, that's actually a long story, as it all started almost 20 years ago... As already mentioned, me and a friend started this black metal band "Permafrost". Not much serious happened during those years, but still we made a bunch of songs, and at least one song made it all the way until more recent times (the instrumental "Glimmer") as well as a few ideas that we used for other songs. When we changed the name to "Ancestral Legacy", things at least got a bit more serious, and we recorded our first demo in 2000, and the second in 2002. After that the other two band members left and I was the only one, he he. So I found new members during 2002 and 2003, and we released two more demos in 2003 and one in 2004. In 2005 our drummer left the band, and this put us inactive for a long time. Not until 2007 there was much activity, then we started recording of our first album, "Nightmare Diaries", but because of more fuck-ups, the album was not released until 2010. Luckily we had a lot of extra songs from the recording session, which we released as a self released EP in 2008. 



5) What about your lyrics? Which are the argoments you like writing?

To be honest I am not very fond of writing lyrics myself. I am very picky and critical and feel I need something important to tell, or at least a good story. But being a boring person, living a boring life, there is not much self experienced to tell about. So for our songs we have often borrowed lyrics from people outside the band, and I think it is a better option to have someone else's good lyrics than having me writing crappy ones.Our previous female vocalist managed to write lyrics for one song during her years in the band, while Isadora, our present female vocalist, is more effective, and wrote a few for "Terminal", as well as some more that will be used for upcoming songs. Personally I don't care much for the topic in the lyrics, as long as they are well written and have a mood that fits the music.



6) Have you already play live?

Sure, our first concert was in our hometown Arendal in 2003, since then there have not been too many concerts, we'd always love to play more gigs. Even so we've played in Germany, The Netherlands and France in addition to Norway. Right now we are in the planning stage of putting together a new tour for Europe this Autumn.
