Nervosa (Thrash Metal dal Brasile)

1) Ciao e benvenute! Presentatevi ai nostri lettori!

Ciao a tutti! Sono Fernanda Lira, bassista e cantante delle Nervosa, dal Brasile! Spero che vi divertirete a leggere la nostra intervista.

2) Nervosa è un monicker davvero strepitoso! Suono "incazzoso", e molto femminista, sullo stile di quanto proposto dalle ragazze della scena Riot Grrrls! Forse una donna dovrebbe prendere coscienza di sé ed essere orgogliosa di essere "nervosa" specialmente contro gli ideali da "borghesia" dove per donna intendiamo una donna "educata, benpensante e frivola".

La nostra intenzione non era quello di essere coinvolte nel femminismo, né di mostrare che le donne non sono deboli, ma è stato il nome che più ci è piaciuto. Volevamo qualcosa di aggressivo, femmminile, corto, facile da ricordare, e in lingua portoghese, per omaggiare la nostra lingua madre, e così abbiamo scelto NERVOSA, aveva tutti i requisiti che cercavamo per il nome della band. Questo non significa che non sono d'accordo con la tua interpretazione, e quello che hai detto, ovvero andare contro i vecchi valori, sono molto d'accordo, penso che uomini e donne dovrebbero essere uguali nella società e faccio del mio meglio per contribuire a questo, ma il nome non aveva a che fare con questo.

3) Potete descriverci la vostra biografia e il vostro stile musicale? Penso che suoniate il buon vecchio Thrash Metal, perfetto per i fans dei primi Kreator e Sodom.

Grazie, è un onore sentirci paragonare a queste band, perché sono sempre stata una fan dei Kreator e dei Sodom!
Ho iniziato a suonare il basso molto tempo fa, quando avevo 12 anni,
influenzata da mio padre. Poco dopo ho deciso anche di cantare, ma non Thrash, un altro stile, sempre Metal.
Quando avevo 15 anni, ho formato la mia prima band, sullo stile molto melodico, poi ho suonato in un'altra band più tradizionale, sul Metal degli anni '80, e poi ancora, un'altra band di un genere completamente differente, più sul Melodic Death Metal,
dove per la prima volta ho cantato con una voce più gutturale, alle backing vocals. Erano tutte band femminili, suppongo che sono molto portata, e mi è sempre piaciuto, suonare con le donne, anche se penso che può essere molto difficile andare d'accordo con qualcuna, certe volte, ahah. Sono uscita da queste band, che amavo molto, e ho deciso che per il meglio sarebbe stato essere fuori dal Metal, ma non è durato molto come stato, perché poi ho realizzato che la musica è la mia vita, e niente potrebbe portarmi via da questo per molto tempo. Poi ho iniziato a ricercare delle ragazze che volessero fare un trio Thrash Metal con me e questo è stato molto complicato perché è stato difficile trovare delle ragazze talentuose disponibili a suonare Metal, specialmente Estremo. Quando stavo per lasciare perdere, ho conosciuto Prika, e mi ha detto che aveva un progetto, "Nervosa", e che stava cercando ragazze per suonare Thrash Metal: la stessa identica idea che avevo io! Ci siamo incontrate in un bar, con molte "caipirinhas" (nota di Lunaria: non ho idea di cosa sia, forse un cocktail da bere) e abbiamo visto che avevamo gli stessi obiettivi e progetti, e così abbiamo deciso di unire le forze per far sì che questo progetto prendesse vita! Da quel momento in poi, le Nervosa hanno iniziato a suonare come una band professionale, e abbiamo lavorato tutte insieme per il nostro sogno! E per lo stile che suoniamo, abbiamo tutte diverse influenze musicali dentro il Metal: Pitchu ama le vecchie band, io ascolto tutti i generi di Metal, specialmente Death e Thrash e Prika
apprezza gli stili più estremi, ma abbiamo deciso di suonare Thrash perché eravamo tutte d'accordo, amiamo moltissimo il Thrash, è lo stile che ci piace suonare! Scriviamo e suoniamo ciò che ci piace ascoltare, così è per questo che puoi trovare molte altre influenze dietro al Thrash della nostra musica. 
 
4) Su YouTube possiamo sentire le vostre song e vedere i vostri video. Potete descriverci il full-lenght "Victims of yourself"? è un concept? Cosa potete dirci sulle lyrics e sul cover artwork?

Non è un concept album, o un album che racconti solo una storia, ma preferiamo dire che tutto l'album parli della "stessa cosa" sul comportamento umano, sulla società, sul carattere umano e tutto il resto. Ci piace scrivere su cose reali, che affrontiamo e vediamo giorno per giorno. Ho sempre detto che le lyrics sono il metodo più caro che ho per esprimere me stessa, perché le uso come un modo per sputare fuori tutto ciò che non va bene con la mia vita di tutti i giorni, per questo motivo nel nostro album trovi politica, comportamento umano, ingiustizia e tutto il resto. Vivere in un paese dove dimora l'ineguaglianza ci dà molta ispirazione per scrivere materiale. Il nome dell'album lo abbiamo trovato dopo una song che aveva lo stesso nome, e parla di come tutto quello che fai ha una conseguenza. Così, se fai cose cattive, devi stare attento che da qualche parte, nel futuro, qualcosa ti arriverà indietro, e dovrai assumerti le tue responsabilità e ammettere le tue azioni, in caso contrario, sarai vittima di te stesso.
L'artwork è stato curato da Andrei Bouzikov, con il quale avevamo già lavorato per il nostro EP. Ha quella vena molto old-school che ci piace molto, e ha un tratto molto aggressivo, e così abbiamo deciso di averlo anche su questo album. Volevamo mostrare l'idea di qualcuno che fosse vittima di se stesso/a, così abbiamo scelto un teschio che si squarta da solo, un modo aggressivo per mostrare che tutto quello che tu fai avrà delle conseguenze che ti torneranno indietro!

5) Ho visto che avete suonato già dal vivo, credo, in Brasile.
Potete raccontarci qualcosa?

Siamo una band che ama essere on the road e suoniamo molto! In Brasile abbiamo visitato la maggior parte degli stati (il nostro paese ha delle dimensioni continentali, così ci sono moltissimi posti dove poter andare) e anche in altri posti, in America Latina, come Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia, Cile, El Salvador, Guatemala!
Questo anno abbiamo in progetto di suonare di più in Brasile e in  America Latina, e abbiamo già un tour confermato e organizzato in Europa, che durerà 2 mesi, partendo da Luglio, siamo molto eccitate all'idea! Dopo questo, abbiamo intenzione di focalizzarci sul Nord America, e subito dopo, registrare il nuovo album, e poi colpire on the road ancora!
 
6) Prossimi obiettivi?

Come ho detto prima (ho il potere di rispondere alla prossima domanda prima che sia stata fatta, ahah!) abbiamo in progetto di suonare più che possiamo, per finire di promuovere "Victim of Yourself", specialmente in Europa e nelle Americhe. Stiamo già lavorando sulle nuove song, per il prossimo album, che registreremo il primo semestre del prossimo anno! Poi sarà tempo di colpire nuovamente on the road e promuovere il nuovo album.

7) Il Brasile è famoso per la sua scena Extreme Metal e per quella
Gothic/Death Rock (Cito i Vultos su tutti, che sono i miei preferiti). Puoi suggerirci qualche altro nome nella scena
Thrash Metal? Ci sono anche molte band Black Metal ma mi piacerebbe sapere se ci sono altre band Metal All Female, in Brasile o in Sud America. Ricordo le Luxuria de Lillith e le Lucifera. Entrambe grandi band.

Il Brasile ha una scena sterminata e molto ricca, ovunque tu vada, in questo stato enorme, troverai una solida scena Metal. Abbiamo così molte band straordinarie, ovunque tu vada, come Torture Squad, Claustrofobia, MX, Jackdevil, Lacerated e Carbonized, e molte, molte altre! Ci sono anche molte band all female, di generi differenti, come Vocífera, Sinaya, Valhalla, Panndora, e molte altre, e band guidate da una leader, o con musiciste, come Necromesis, Autopse, Cauterization, ecc. Dovreste cercarle, non ve ne pentirete, sono tutte band di qualità!
 
8) Finisci come vuoi la nostra intervista, e spero di vedervi qui in Italia! Abbiamo bisogno di ragazze come voi!!!

1) Hello and welcome here! Let's introduce yourself!

Hey, everyone! This is Fernanda Lira, bassist and Singer for Nervosa, from Brazil! I hope you all enjoy the interview!


2) Nervosa is an amazing name! It sounds angry, crazy and real feminist, maybe in the Riot Grrrls' style! Yeah, sometimes a woman should be proud of being "nervosa" and go against the middle class' values and his idea of a "polite and weak and dumb woman"... 

Actually, our intention on the name wasn´t it to be feminist neither to show that women aren´t weak, it´s actually Just a name we liked! We wanted something aggressive, girly, short, easy to remembered and in portuguese, as a way to homage our language, and that´s why we chose NERVOSA, it had all the features we were looking for in a band's name! This doesn´t mean i personally don´t agree with what you said, that women should go against old values, i agree with that very much, i believe men and women should be equal in society and i do my Best to achieve that, but the name doesn´t have pretty much to do with that.


3) Can you describe your biography and your music style? I think you play a good old Thrash Metal Sound... It's perfect for erly Kreator and Sodom's fans.

Thanks a lot and it's a honor to listen to such a comparison, because i've always been a fan of Kreator and Sodom too! So, i began playing bass a long time ago, when i was about 12 years old, influenced by my dad! A little later i decided i wanted to sing also, but not thrash, but other styles inside metal. When i was 15 i joined my first band, which was a melodic metal one, then i joined another one where we used to play traditional metal sounding like the 80´s, then i jumped to another completely different genre, joining a ´melodic death metal´ band, where, for the first time i sang with a raspy gutural voice, doing backing vocals. All of them were all female, i guess i always liked to play with other women even though it can be REALLY hard to get along with sometimes hahaha I got kicked out from this band which i liked very much and for a while, i decided it would be Best for me to be away from metal, but it didn't last long, once music is my life and nothing would ever keep me away from that for much longer. Then i started to make a reasearch for girls to be in a thrash metal trio with me, and this was a very hard and long proccess because it is still hard to find committed and talented girls available to play metal, especially extreme metal. When i was about to give up, i got to know Prika, and she told me she had a Project: she was looking for girls to join her Project ´Nervosa´ to play thrash metal: the exact Idea i had! We met a bar, had tonz of ´caipirinhas´ and we saw that we had the same goals and objectives, then we decided to joing forces to make this Project happen! From that moment on, Nervosa started functioning as a real Professional band and we´ve been working together towards our dream! As for the style we play, we all have different musical influences inside metal: Pitchu likes old bands very much, i appreciate all the genres in metal, especially death and thrash and Prika appreciates most the mos extreme styles, but we decided to play thrash because we all agree on that, we all like thrash very much, it´s a style we like to play! We say that we write and play what we like to hear, so that's why you can find many other influences besides thrash in our music.


4) On YouTube we can listen your songs and watch your videos. Can you describe this album, "Victims of yourself"? Is it a concept? What about the lyrics and the cover artwork?

It's not a conceptional album, i mean, an album which tells only one story, but we like to say that whole album talks about ´the same thing´, about the human behaviour, about society, about human charachter and everything else. We like to write about real things we face and see Day by Day. I always say that the lyrics are my dearest way of expressing myself, because i use them as a way to spit out everything i don´t agree with in my routine around me, so that's why in our album you Will find about politics, about human behaviour, about injustice and everything. Living in a very unequal country also gives us a lot of inspiration to write stuff. The name of the album goes after a song of the same name we have on the álbum, and it talks about eveyrthing you do has a consequence. So If you do bad things, you have to be aware that somewhere in the future something Will come your way back, and you have to stand for your responsabilities and admit your actions, otherwise you Will be a victim of yourself. The artwork was done by Andrei Bouzikov, with whom we had previously worked on our EP. He has that old school vein we like a lot and He has very aggressive sketches, so we decided to have him on this abum too. We wanted to show this Idea of a someone being a victim of him/herself, so we chose a skull stabbing itself, as an aggressive way to show that for everything you do, there Will be consequences back to you!


5) I have seen that you have already play live, I suppose, in Brazil. Can you tell us something about this?

We are a band which loves to be on the Road and we play a lot! In Brazil we have been to most of our states (our country has continental dimensions, so there´s a lot of places to play here) and also in some places in Latin America, such as Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala! This year we plan to be playing more in Brasil and Latin America and we already have a scheduled and confirmed tour in Europe, which Will last 2 months, starting from July, we are very excited about it! Right after that, we want to focus in getting to play North America, and right after that, we Will focus on recording the new álbum, then hit the Road again!


6) Next goals?

As i Said before (i have this Power of answering the next answer before it´s asked! Hahaha). We plan to play as much as we can to finish promoting Victim of Yourself, especially in Europe and the Americas. We are already working on new songs for the next album, which we Will Record on the first semester of the next year! Then it´s time to hit the Road again to promote the new album!


7) Brazil is famous for his Extreme Metal Scene and for his Gothic/Death Rock scene (I love Vultos above all). Can you suggest us some others new bands names in Thrash Metal scene? There are a lots of Black Metal bands too, but I'd like to know if there are others All Female Bands, in Brazil or South America. I remember Luxuria de Lillith and Lucifera. Both great bands.

Brazil has a very wide and rich scene, wherever you go here in this huge country, you Will find a solid metal scene. Thanks to that we have many awesome bands everywhere you go here, such as Torture Squad, Claustrofobia, MX, Jackdevil, Lacerated and Carbonized, among many many more! There´s also A LOT of all female metal bands from many different metal genres, such as Vocífera, Sinaya, Valhalla, Panndora, and many more, and also some female fronted bands and with other female musicians, such as Necromesis, Autopse, Cauterization, etc. You guys should check them all out, you won´t regret, all of them are quality metal bands!
