Fantastico! La mia prima intervista con un artista che suona Jazz Metal! Non che io abbia ascoltato moltissimo nel genere,  a parte Atheist, Cynic (gods!), Pestilence, Nocturnus,  Lux Occulta, e i nuovi arrivati Amogh Symphony e Conflux, ma ci tenevo a cimentarmi in un'intervista diversa dal solito

1) Ciao e benvenuto, presentati ai nostri lettori!

Sono Felix Martin, un chitarrista dal Venezuela che vive a Los Angeles, California.
Giro con la mia band, che si esibisce col mio nome, e uso una 14 string guitar per questo progetto musicale.


2) Ho visto il tuo video su YouTube; qualcuno l'ha postato su una community Jazz su Google+, condividendone il link con gli altri utenti. Puoi raccontarci qualcosa sul video?

Credo che tu ti stia referendo al "Jazz Metal video". è stato registrato al Berklee College Of Music di Boston. La canzone è un mix di "Jazz straight ahead", bello dritto e tirato, col Metal. è stata ispirata da entrambi gli stili.


3) Puoi parlarci della tua biografia? Primi passi, demo, e così via...

Sono nato in Venezuela e ho iniziato a suonare la chitarra all'incirca quando avevo 12 anni. Sono stato un autodidatta per molti anni, e più tardi mi sono trasferito a Boston per studiare al Berklee College Of Music. Dopo un po' di tempo che studiavo lì, ho iniziato a ricercare delle opportunità per poter registrare e suonare.

4) Suoni un genere di musica che potremmo etichettare come
"Jazz Metal". Non mi intendo molto, dal punto di vista tecnico
del Jazz e del Blues, non frequento le scene, ma ascolto qualcosa, per esempio Dinah Washington. Il Jazz Bebop è molto arduo per me, anche se ho sentito qualcosa tipo Coltrane, Jaco Pastorius e Thelonius Monk. Nel Metal Avantgarde amo soprattutto i Cynic: "Focus" è incredibile. Ho anche ascoltato Pestilence, Atheist, i Lux Occulta di "Architecture" e i Nocturnus, oltre che una nuova band, in questo genere, gli Amogh Symphony. Tutti questi sono esempi di come si può suonare in modo originale... ma ci sono più amanti di Jazz o Metal, tra i tuoi fans? Che elementi hanno in comune, questi due mondi, a tuo parere? Puoi dirci cosa ti piace ascoltare? Pensi di fare qualche cover dei pezzi Jazz più famosi?

La nostra audience è sicuramente più Metal, e siamo sulla scena Metal. Abbiamo delle influenze Jazz, ma non siamo idonei a collocarci nella scena Jazz. Sono due stili di musica molto differenti, per questo ci piacciono, perché offrono molte possibilità. Il Jazz Fusion potrebbe essere relazionato con ciò che facciamo, in qualche modo. Artisti come Alex Machacek e
Allan Holdsworth sono un po' simili. Ma sono sulla scena Jazz, non Metal.

5) Avete già suonato live? Per caso anche in Italia?
è difficile suonare on stage questo particolare genere di musica?

Abbiamo già girato in tour gran parte degli USA, del Sud America e 14 paesi in Europa. Abbiamo suonato a Padova e Udine 2 anni fa.

6) Prossimi obiettivi? Avete in mente qualcosa?

Un nuovo album, un side project chiamato "The Human Transcription", un tour e più video!

Provate a essere differenti almeno un po' e pensare al di fuori degli "inscatolamenti mentali"! Qualunque cosa facciate per vivere, siate brave persone!

 1) Hello and welcome, let's introduce yourself!

I'm Felix Martin, a guitarist from Venezuela living in Los Angeles, CA. I tour with my own band under my name and I use a 14 string guitar for this instrumental project.


2) I have seen your video on YouTube; someone, on a Jazz community on Google+, shared the link of your video with other users of the community. Can you tell us something about that video?

I guess you are refering to the Jazz Metal video. It was recorded at berklee college of music in Boston. The song is a mix of straight ahead jazz with Metal. It was inspired on both styles.


3) Can you speak about your biography? first steps, first demo and so on...

I was born in Venezuela and started playing guitar at around the age of 12. I was self tought for many years, and later on I moved to Boston to study at Berklee college of music. After spending a bit of time there, I started to get offers like record deals and touring opportunities.


4) You play some music who could be called "Jazz Metal".
I am not into Jazz or Blues scene, but I love something like Dinah Washington. Jazz and Bebop are very hard for me, but I have listened to Coltrane, Jaco Pastorius and Thelonius Monk. In the extreme Metal/Avantgarde scene, I love expecially Cynic! "Focus" is amazing. I have listened Pestilence, Atheist, Lux Occulta of "Architecture" and Nocturnus, too, and a new band in this genre is Amogh Symphony. These are some examples of a very original way to play music. But... are more Jazz lovers or Metal lovers the followers of your music? What elements have in common these two worlds, in your opinion? Can you suggest us something about the cult names in Jazz you love to listen? Do you plan to do some covers of the most famous Jazz songs?

Our audience is definately more metal, and we work on the metal scene. We have jazz influences, but we don't fit in the Jazz scene.
They are two very different styles of music, that's why we like it, because there are many possibilities.
Jazz fusion could be related to us in some way. Artist like Alex Machacek and Allan Holdsworth are a bit similar. But they are on the Jazz scene, not the metal.


5) Have you already play live? Have you already visit Italy?
Is it difficult play on stage this particular kind of music?

We already toured most of the USA, South America and about 14 counties in Europe.  We played in Padova and Udine 2 years ago.


6) Next goals? Are you planning something?

A new album, a side project called the human transcription, touring and more videos!

Just try to be a little different and think outside the box! Whatever you do for a living! And be a good person!
