2) Trovo il vostro monicker, Vodun, molto in linea con la vostra proposta. Esprime le vostre credenze spirituali, no?
I ritmi Afro sono molto interessanti e ci donano un'inclinazione
differente, "una torsione", alla vibrazione pesante, Heavy, della band. Il lato spirituale della connessione con la natura e l'aspetto dei Loa al femminile ci intrigano molto. Sento che il fenomeno della possessione è simile a quello che speriamo di realizzare durante i nostri live - dedizione personale, sudore, convulsioni e offrire tutto te stesso alla musica.
3) Potete riepilogarci la vostra storia: demo, primi passi, line up... tutto ciò che c'è da dire sui Vodun.
OYA e io (OGOUN) eravamo prima in un'altra band, gli Invasion, che aveva una line up simile. Dopo che ci siamo sciolti, ho incontrato GHEDE attraverso un amico in comune, e ci siamo ubriacate e abbiamo parlato per tutta la notte di musica e droghe psichedeliche... serata finita poi con l'improvvisare qualcosa, e così questo è quello che siamo oggi. Il nostro primo demo è stato realizzato in due giorni allo studio Holy Mountain nella zona est di Londra... Il nostro album è stato completato quest'anno in quattro giorni e registrato al Bear Bites Horse studio. L'album è molto più progressivo che l'EP - 10 tracks di pesante, folle afrobeat per jams. Penso che abbiamo catturato l'essenza del nostro live show col nostro album, ora dobbiamo solo trovare qualcuno che ci aiuti a promuoverlo!
4) Qual'è il significato del cover artwork?
Vediamo alcuni teschi, strane ali, un serpente, mani e un occhio... Il serpente è molto importante nel pantheon Africano... Penso al figlio di Mami Wata, il Serpente Dan... e il Loa più famoso di Haiti, il Dio Serpente Damballah.
Noi abbiamo dato il nostro EP a un amico e questo è stato ciò che lui è stato ispirato a disegnare. Ovviamente ha preso moltissime influenze dalla cultura Voodoo e le lyrics delle nostre canzoni (che riguardano molto alcuni Loa del Voodoo e le pratiche). Il teschio è un triplo teschio in tre forme, e ci rappresenta, noi tre, come una singola unità.
5) Avete davvero una vocalist che ha una voce potentissima! Con un forte senso del ritmo tra Doom e Stoner. Come definite il vostro stile musicale?
Noi ci definiamo Heavy-Afro-Soul-Psych ma penso che la nostra musica possa anche essere catalogata sotto la descrizione di Alternative Rock.
6) Un'altra cosa interessante sono i titoli delle vostre canzoni:
parlate di alcuni Dei e Dee Africane... per esempio,
Erzulie, una delle mie preferite, insieme a Pomba Gira.
Altre Dee che amo sono Oya, Jemanja e Mami Wata.
Potete parlarci un po' del vostro concept?
Sì, Oya è la nostra preferita, ed è quello che la nostra vocalist rappresenta: "Oya, quando le emozioni burrascose e le circostanze tempestose prevalgono, è il conduttore al centro della distruzione e del caos. Convoglia gli spiriti del passato e del futuro, ancora sconosciuti - scatena la possessione nei canti e nelle melodie al di là della sfera terrestre. Respira con occhi grandi e spalancati, dalle sue guance soffia, poi ulula. (Oya è la Dea dei venti e delle tempeste, infatti. Nota di Lunaria).
Oya è lo spirito del cambiamento, e lei dà l'opportunità di questo, per una crescita nuova.
Erzulie è uno dei nostri titoli, (è la Dea dell'amore e della compassione), ma la canzone è più centrata sulla rappresentazione deleteria delle donne nella società (e nella religione), e come donne siamo caricate di responsabilità e fatte sentire in colpa per varie ragioni.
Aida Wedo è il Serpente dell'Arcobaleno, e le lyrics riguardano il non rinunciare nel combattere i poteri di chi sta distruggendo il pianeta. Zaka tratta un tema simile - come noi stiamo inquinando l'aria che respiriamo col nostro attuale stile di vita, e il bisogno che abbiamo di ritornare alla terra in connessione spirituale.
7) Avete già suonato dal vivo?
Oh sì. Il nostro live è qualcosa di cui noi andiamo orgogliose. Ti faccio leggere un paio di recensioni prese dai giornali, per darti un'idea:
"La band Vodun sembra più una tribù che non una rock band; nelle loro performance letteralmente rivestite di un body paint amazzonico e costumi da guerriere, possiedono un'autentica attitudine fendente, come se esplodessero dentro lo sconosciuto limite di una psychedelia selvaggia, allo stato brado" (nell'intervista in inglese si parla di "fuzzy" che significa letteralmente "ricoperto di peli", nota di Lunaria) - The Sleeping Shaman
"Ricoperte di pitture di guerra, con toghe e abbigliamento tribale, il trio sembrerebbe uscito da "Apocalypto" se Mel Gibson si fosse calato un acido mentre filmava. Con una semplice chitarra, batteria, vocals, realizzano un fracasso tremendo" - Metal Hammer
8) Prossimi obiettivi?
Rilasciare il nostro album e poi portare il fuoco del nostro live show anche in altre regioni.
9) In Italia, è difficile trovare libri o notizie sui culti religiosi dal Brasile o dall'Africa. Ho trovato solo due libri; uno di essi "Viaggio tra gli Dei Africani" è stato scritto da Mauro Burzio, credo uno dei pochi studiosi italiani che hanno studiato la religione Africana, gli Dei e la Trance. Sono appassionata di Neo Paganesimo, specialmente Dee e Sacerdotesse,
così mi interessa leggere anche qualcosa sul Voodoo o il mondo degli Sciamani, ma l'Italia è ancora uno stato cristiano, nella mente della gente, così raramente i mass media parlano delle altre religioni... Qui, la maggior parte delle persone ancora crede in un "solo Dio", e non conoscono niente su altri culti basati su più Dei, specialmente le Dee! Ancora seguono l'idea del "Dio Padre" e del "Dio maschio"...
Sì, l'Italia è ancora trincerata nella tradizione, la credenza monoteistica e il dio patriarcale... speriamo che i tempi cambino.
(Nota di Lunaria: la vedo dura, considerato l'ignoranza teologica che dilaga in giro tra le cristianucole moderne...)

1) Hello and welcome here! Let's introduce yourself!
Collectively, we are Vodun: Oya, Ghede and Ogoun.
2) I find your monicker, Vodun, very cool. I suppose you have chosen this word for express your spiritual belief?
Afro-beat rhythms are very interesting and add a different twist to the heavy vibe of the band. The spiritual side of connecting with nature and the aspect of female loas are also very appealing to us. I feel the phenomenon of possession is similar to what we hope to achieve in our live shows - personal defences down, sweat, convulsions and giving yourself over to the music.
3) Can you speak about your band story: first demo, first steps, line up... all you can say about your story.
OYA and myself (OGOUN) were first in another band INVASION that had a similar line up. After we disbanded, I met GHEDE through a mutual friend and we got very drunk together and spoke all night about music and psychedelic drugs... ended up jamming and this is where we are today. Our first demo was done in 2 days at Holy Mountain studio in East London... Our album was completed this year in 4 days at Bear Bites Horse studio. The album is a lot more progressive thaN the EP - 10 tracks of heavy, crazy afrobeat style jams. I think we captured the essence of our live show pretty well with the album - now we just NEED to find someone to help us release it!
4) What is the meaning of the cover artwork? We can see some skulls, strange wings, a snake, hands and one eye... The snake is a very important element in the African pantheon... I know Mami Wata's son, Dan... and the most famous Loa from Haiti is Damballah, the Serpent God.
We gave our EP to a friend and that is what he was inspired to draw! Obviously he has taken a lot of influence from Voodoo culture and the lyrics within our songs (which also relate a lot to Vodun loas and practices). The skull is actually a triple headed skull in one form, which is representational of us as a single unit.
5) You have a powerful vocals! And a strong and heavy sense of the rhythm between Doom and Stoner. How you can named your music style?
We often refer to ourselves as heavy-afro-soul-psych, but I guess our music also falls under the broad description of Alternative rock.
6) Another interesting things are the titles of your songs: you speak about some African Gods and Goddesses... for example, Erzulie, one of my fav Goddess, with Pomba Gira. Another Goddesses I love are Oya, Jemanja and Mami Wata.
Can you speak about your concept and your lyrics?
Yeah, Oya is a favourite of ours and is what our vocalist represents: "Oya; stormy emotions and tempestuous circumstances prevail, and Oya is the conductor at the centre of the destruction and chaos. Channelling spirits past and futures unknown - she unleashes the possession in other worldly chants and unearthly melodies. With big and open eyes she breathes, blows up her cheeks, then howls. Oya is the spirit of change, and she makes room for vibrant new growth."
Erzulie is one of our song titles (after the goddess of love and compassion) but the song is actually about the misrepresentation of females in society (and religion),and how as women we are burdened with blame and guilt for various reasons.
Aida Wedo is the rainbow serpent, our lyrics of that song are about not backing down from fighting the powers that be who are destroying the planet. Zaka is a similar theme - how we are poisoning even the air we breath with the way we currently live, and the need for us to return to an earth connected spirituality.
7) Have you already played live?
Oh yes. Our live show is something we are quite proud of. Here are a couple of press quotes to give you an idea:
"Vodun feel more like a tribe than a rock band; by committing to their live performances literally clad in Amazonian body-paint and evil-battling stage costumes, they possess a genuine edge as they blast off into the unknown fringes of fuzzy psychedelia" - The Sleeping Shaman "Decked-out in war paint, bright gowns and tribal wear, the trio look a bit like something out of Apocalypto if Mel Gibson had been hitting the acid pretty hard while filming. For a simple guitar, drums, vocal set up they make an unholy racket" - Metal Hammer.
8) Next goals?
To unleash our album and then bring the fire of our live show to other regions.
9) In Italy, it's hard to find some books or news about religions from Brazil or Africa. I have found only two books about these form of religions; one of them, "Viaggio tra gli Dei Africani" (in english should sound "Journey to the African Gods") was written by Mauro Burzio, I suppose, one of few italian thinkers who has studied the African religion about Gods and Trance. I am in love with Neo Paganism, expecially with Goddesses and High Priestesses, so I am interesting reading something from Voodoo or Sciamanism, but Italy it's still a "christian place", in "people's mind" so rarely mass media, Tv, Radio or newpapers speak about other religions... Here, the most of people still believe only in "one God", they can know nothing about concept based upon more Gods, expecially Female Goddesses! They still follow the idea of "God the father... God the male".
Yes Italy is still very entrenched in traditional, monotheistic belief and a patriarchal god... Hopefully times will change.
