p.s tra l'altro, e quasi nessuno lo penserebbe, i cattolici fanatici del centro di san giorgio detestano anche il Reggae!!! Mephiskapheles e Africa Unite (quelli di "In Nomine", canzone anti-clericale) i gruppi da loro aborriti, e io per farla a loro sono proprio andata a sentirmi queste due band che manco conoscevo, su Youtube e a mettere il "mi piace"!!! xD
1) Ciao e benvenuti! Presentatevi ai nostri lettori!
Ciao a tutti, siamo gli Eyesburn, amanti del Rock n roll/Punk/Reggae/Blues/Metal e musicisti sinceri e devoti alla causa sin dal 1994 da Belgrado (Serbia). E io sono Coyote, cantante, chitarrista e trombettista nella band.
2) Perché avete scelto Eyesburn, come monicker?
Quando ci siamo formati, la guerra in Yugoslavia infuriava per tutti gli angoli del paese, e noi eravamo in mezzo, sotto il regime di Slobodan Milosevic, la propaganda fatta dai media era fortissima, ed eravamo esposti a notizie dell'orrore tutti i giorni, corpi straziati, distruzione delle città, gente morta, bambini uccisi, a soli 100 km dal centro della capitale, cercavamo di evitare di essere arruolati e rifiutarci di essere mobilizzati... Sapevamo che l'odio tra le nazioni della ex Yugoslavia era una cospirazione dei media. Così il nome Eyesburn, (occhi che bruciano, occhi bruciati) è arrivato come una risposta alla propaganda tv di tutti i giorni. Oggi ci piace scherzare col nome della band, dicendo che ci siamo chiamati così perché ci piace che i nostri occhi diventino rossi, dal momento che amiamo gli effetti del fumo...
3) Potete parlarci della vostra biografia e del vostro full-lenght, "Reality check"? Nella copertina, vediamo un leone... perché avete scelto il leone come simbolo del vostro lavoro? è un concept? E per quanto riguarda le lyrics?
La cosa più importante sulla natura della nostra band è che proveniamo tutti da background differenti, originariamente abbiamo iniziato a fare un mix tra l'Hard Core di New York e un revival dei Black Sabbath; agli inizi Corrosion of Conformity, Bad Brains, Biohazard, Dub War... erano le nostre maggiori influenze.
Io ero il membro che più amava il Reggae e così abbiamo iniziato ad aprire le orecchie anche alle radici del Reggae Giamaicano e Inglese, perché volevamo identificare la nostra realtà con la vita e le problematiche del terzo mondo. Il nostro primo album "Dog life" era molto Hard Core/Stoner, ma col nostro secondo album "Fool Control" abbiamo aperto un nuovo capitolo come band crossover, mixando l'Hard Core e lo Stoner Rock col Reggae e le vibrazioni Hip Hop e Drum 'n' Bass. Questo è il percorso che abbiamo seguito per "Reality Check".
"Reality Check" è attualmente un album re-union perché non abbiamo lavorato per 6 anni, come band. In questi 6 anni io sono stato occupato come cantante Reggae in una band, anche se sono principalmente un trombettista e ho lavorato e registrato dischi con artisti come Lee Scratch Perry, Max Romeo, Lutan Fyah, Jah Mason...
Il leone sulla cover simbolizza la forza della nostra re-union. Originariamente era un dipinto ad olio del nostro amico Tanja Rajkovic.
4) Suonate un mix stranissimo tra Metal e Reggae... Penso che sia perfetto per tutti gli amanti di Ill Nino, Puya, Hed(pe), Skindred... tutta la gente che ama il crossover, specialmente quello con la musica più nera, dovrebbe ascoltare la vostra musica!
Voi come la definireste? Io la trovo molto rilassante (vedi il video di "Time") e molto divertente e allegra (il video di "Frontline"); la trovo molto positiva... è fantastico vedere come la gente sia piena di creatività e come qualcuno possa suonare un nuovo mix unendo il sound pacifico e rilassante del Reggae con la potenza dei riff Metal...
Penso che siamo un po' i pioneri di tutte queste band che hai menzionato (che ci piacciono moltissimo), senza mancar loro di rispetto... Prima di noi c'erano solo i Bad Brains e i Dub War, abbiamo iniziato a registrare Reggae Metal nel 1998, ma il problema era che non siamo potuti emergere prima dal nostro paese per via della situazione politica, il visto per andare all'estero, e la barriera linguistica... il tempo ce lo dirà, siamo le RADICI europee del Reggae Metal.
5) In Italia la band più famosa nel Reggae sono gli Africa Unite. Non sono dentro questo genere di musica, ma mi ha fatto molto piacere scoprirvi su YuoTube... è stato dopo aver sentito un'intervista alla radio... la persona che parlava, stava raccontando del Reggae e della sua evoluzione... così ho pensato "Chissà se qualcuno ha mixato il Reggae al Metal!!! Proviamo a controllare!!!" e così, andando su YouTube ho digitato "Reggae Metal"... trovando voi e altre due band (Butumbaba e Skindred)
Puoi parlarci un po' del mondo del Reggae? Perché avete scelto di suonare un crossover tra questi due mondi?
Tra l'altro, studiando la mitologia e il folklore (non solo europeo) mi piace scoprire del Metal originale che venga dall'India, Africa e altri paesi stranieri... Metal Tribale, Folk Metal, Mantra mixati al Metal, Jazz Metal, non "la solita minestra" ma qualcosa che sia davvero innovativo!
Amo davvero come vedi le cose, Lunaria! Attualmente i musicisti dell'originale Reggae Giamaicano sono chiamati rockers nei loro paesi e posso garantirti che ogni canzone Reggae può essere suonata come una canzone Rock o Metal... o da un riff dei Black Sabbath puoi tirarci fuori un bassline Reggae /Dub, devi solo aprire i tuoi sensi e lasciare che la musica scorra e vedrai che tutta la musica del mondo è connessa...e viene dalla fonte più alta dello spirito umano, l'amore, la fede e valori solidi. Per me la cosa più importante è cantare e suonare dal profondo del mio cuore, non importa il genere musicale.
(Nota di Lunaria: mi è venuto in mente che un artista Dub Reggae Drum'n'Bass come Bong-Ra ha fatto una cover degli Slayer!!! Da non crederci!!!)
6) Puoi parlarci un po' della scena Alternative/Metal del tuo paese? So che ci sono buone Gothic band come Trivalia e Tales of Dark (entrambe intervistate, eh eh!!!)
La scena qui è davvero molto ricca, alcuni dei miei preferiti sono Spaceater (Thrash Metal), In from the cold (Sludge/Stoner), S.M.F.(hard core), Consecration (Psychodelic stoner), Temple of the Smoke (psy-rock), IRIE FM (roots reggae), Smoke and Soul (roots reggae) Dot the Eye (Groove-thrash) Concrete Worms (hard core-punk) Vox Populi (Anarcho punk)... Questi sono solo alcuni dei nomi che meritano attenzione... e mi piace scoprire i ragazzi più giovani che iniziano a suonare!
7) Avete già suonato dal vivo?
Abbiamo celebrato il nostro anniversario di 20 anni, che è stato sold-out a Belgrado, il più grande evento rock dallo scorso dicembre e abbiamo suonato con Prodigy, Queens of the Stone Age, Asian Dub Foundation... Quest'anno suoneremo per festival come l'EXIT (in Serbia) e poi ancora a Sziget (in Ungheria)... Il nostro tour più lungo è stato nel 2004 quando abbiamo suonato di supporto ai Soulfly di Max Cavalera per ben 23 concerti e abbiamo anche collaborato per la canzone "Moses" e "Inner Spirit"... nel 2005 abbiamo suonato di nuovo con i Soulfly per il tour scandinavo dei Black Sabbath.

1) Hello and welcome here! Let's introduce yourself!
Hi, Greetings to each and everyone, we are Eyesburn, a Rock n roll/Punk/Reggae/Blues/Metal music lovers and devouted players since 1994 from Belgrade(Serbia). And Im Coyote, singer, guitarist and trombonist in the band.
2) What is the meaning of your monicker, Eyesburn?
In the time when we were formed, the war in Yougoslavia raged on all four corners of the country and we were in the middle under the regime of Slobodan Milosevic, the media propaganda was so strong and we were exposed to the horror news everyday, choped bodies in half, destruction of cities, dead people, dead children, just 100km from the center of capital, we were all running from army obligation and refused to be mobilized... We had a high councesness that the hatred between nations of ex Yogoslavia was a media conspiracy. So the Eyesburn name came as an answer to the eveyday TV propaganda. Nowadays we like to joke that we name the band Eyesburn cause we like our eyes to be red, cause we love to enjoy in the powers of the herbal smoke.
3) Can you speak about your biography and your full-lenght, "Reality Check"? In the cover artwork, we can see a lion... Why have you chosen the lion, as symbol of your work? Is it a concept? What about the lyrics?
The most important thing about the nature of the band is that we all come from the different music backgrounds, originaly we started as a mixture of NY hard core and Black Sabbath revival style, in the beginnigs Corrosion Of Conformity, Bad Brains, Biohazard, Dub War... were our main unfluences, I was the reggae man in the band, we used to open our ears to the UK and Jamaican roots reggae, cause we could indentify our reality with the life and problems of the third world countries. Our 1st album DOG LIFE was primary Hard Core/Stoner, but with our 2nd album FOOL CONTROL, we opened a new chapter as a crossover band, mixing Hard core and Stoner Rock with Reggae and Drum'n'Bass Hip Hop vibes. So that was the path the we kept until REALITY CHECK.
REALITY CHECK is actually our re-unioun album cause we didnt work 6 years together as a band. In those 6 years I was devouted in playing reggae music as a singer but primary as a trombonist, I've recorded and worked with artists like Lee Scratch Perry, Max Romeo, Lutan Fyah, Jah Mason.....
The lion on the cover symbolize the strenght of our re-union. Originally that is an oil painted artwork from our friend Tanja Rajkovic.
4) You play a strange mix about Metal and Reggae... I think it's perfect for all the lovers of bands such as Ill Nino, Puya, Hed(pe), Skindred... all people who love this kind of crossover music should listen your music! How should you label your music? I find it very relaxing ("Time") and funny and happy ("Frontline").
I find it positive... It's wonderful seeing how people is full of creativity and how someone can play a new mix adding the peaceful sounds of Reggae to the power of the Metal's riffs and guitar...
Well I must say that all these bands you have mentioned (no dis respect, we really like those bands), we are pioneers to them... there were only Bad Brains and Dub War before us, we started to record Reggae Metal in 1998, but the problem that we didn't emerge from the borders of our country because of political situation, visas and other babylon barriers... time will tell, we are the Europian ROOTS of Reggae Metal.
5) In Italy the most famous band in Reggae is Africa Unite... I'm not into this kind of music, but I am very happy discovering you on YouTube (by the way, it was after listening an interview on a radio... people were speaking about Reggae and his evolution... so I thought to myself "Well, maybe someone mix Reggae with Metal!! Let's check it!" and after going on YouTube I wrote "Reggae Metal", finding you and two other bands...) Can you speak about this world, Reggae? Why have you chosen playing a crossover music between these two worlds?
By the way, in this period I am studying mithology and folklore (not only european) and I love discovering some strange and original Metal coming from nations like India, Africa, and so on... Tribal Metal, Folk Metal, Oriental Mantras mixed with
Metal, Jazz Metal, well, not "the same old story", but something who is really fresh and exciting!!!
I really love how you see things dear Luna! Actually Jamaican roots reggae players were called the Rockers in their country, and I can guarantee to you that every Roots reggae song can be played as a Rock or Metal song... or from any Black Sabbath riff you can make a wicked Reggae/Dub bassline, you just need to open your senses and let the music flow and you will see that all the music of the world is actually linked... and its coming from the higher source wich is human spirit, love, faith and certain beliefs. For me the most important thing is singing and playing from the heart no matter the music genre.
6) Can you speak about the Alternative/Metal scene from your country? I know there are some good Gothic bands like Trivalia or Tales of Dark...
The scene overhere is musically very rich, some of my favourites are Spaceater (Thrash), In from the cold (Sludge/Stoner), S.M.F.(hard core), Consecration (Psychodelic stoner), Temple of the Smoke (psy-rock), IRIE FM (roots reggae), Smoke and Soul (roots reggae) Dot the Eye (Groove-thrash) Concrete Worms (hard core-punk) Vox Populi(Anarcho punk)... those are just some of the names that definetly deserve attention. And with new kids I have a pleasant surprises everyday!
7) Have you already play live?
We celebrated the 20 years anniversary in sold out Belgrade biggest rock venue SKC last december, through our carrier we opened for the Prodigy, Queens of The Stone Age, Asian Dub Foundation... This year we are booked for festivals like EXIT(Serbia), Sziget (Hungary)... Our longest tour happened in the year 2004 when we opened 23 gigs for Soulfly (Max Cavalera), cause we colaborated on the songs MOSES and INNER SPIRIT.. in the 2005 half of the band again joined Soulfly to open the Black Sabbath scandinavian tour.
