1) Ciao e benvenuto! Puoi presentarti ai nostri lettori italiani?
Grazie, e ciao a tutti! Il mio nome è Nel (Nelwat Bunchhoeun) e sono il chitarrista e leader della band PROR HOK. Ho 28 anni e vivo in una piccola città chiamata Mandal. Mandal è un piccola e bellissima città in Norvegia, e ho vissuto lì per 10 anni. Io e la mia famiglia ci siamo spostati dalla Cambogia nel 2000 per via degli eventi criminali che succedevano in quel periodo, e prima siamo stati rifugiati in Thailandia per 5 anni prima di spostarci in Norvegia. Ho iniziato a suonare la chitarra quando avevo 14 anni e ricordo che la mia famiglia era così povera che dovevo risparmiare e mettere da parte i soldi per un anno per poter comprare una chitarra usata a buon mercato, chiamata JOJO. Comprai un manuale musicale per gli autodidatti e ho iniziato a "insegnarmi" da solo. In quel tempo ho visto molti concerti di qualsiasi band in Tv giusto solo per vedere come suonavano dal vivo. Mentre io e la mia famiglia aspettavamo che un paese accettasse i rifugiati, suonavo in una band thailandese, chiamata (BIZZ), con 4 membri. Abbiamo suonato in alcuni locali a Bangkok e un piccolo locale ci aveva ingaggiati ma dopo pochi mesi, io e la mia famiglia ci siamo spostati e così la band si è sciolta.
2) Perché avete scelto "Pror Hok" come monicker della band? Cosa significa questa parola?
PROR HOK è il nome di uno dei più celebri piatti cambogiani. Non ha un buon odore ma è buonissimo. La gente in Cambogia ama e odia il Pror Hok. Ci serviva un nome che nessuno avesse usato prima e abbiamo pensato che PROR HOK fosse un buon nome.
3) Su youtube possiamo sentire le vostre canzoni; ho sentito il vostro EP. Suonate un Metalcore melodico (un po' sullo stile dei Caliban, in alcuni passaggi) con un tocco di tristezza e melodia (sullo stile dei The Rasmus), e alcuni riff melodici di matrice punk. Come etichettereste il vostro stile musicale?
Il mio stile è un mix di Punk, Metal e Rock. Mi piace il Metal melodico ma mio nipote (Nuth - vocalist) è un amante del punk/slow rock e quindi abbiamo due modi diversi di appocciarsi alla musica e diversi gusti; quando scriviamo le canzoni insieme, usiamo sempre la chitarra acustica. Prima sento il suo modo di cantare poi scrivo i riff. Penso che sia importante che sia la voce che "comandi" la linea guida della canzone, rende il mio lavoro più semplice per scrivere la parte di chitarra, successivamente.
4) Puoi dirci quali sono gli argmenti delle lyrics? Di cosa ti piace parlare?
Le mie lyrics parlano della differenza tra ricchi e poveri, la lotta per la vita e l'amore.
5) Avete mai suonato dal vivo in Cambogia? E in altri stati?
No, non ancora, perché non siamo attivi, al momento. Siamo una "garage band" e suoniamo qualche volta quando abbiamo tempo. Suoniamo solo per divertimento. Siamo molto occupati col lavoro, la scuola e la famiglia. Ma quando ci sarà occasione, ci farà piacere suonare dal vivo.
6) Come ti ho detto per mail, sono molto interessata all'Asia! Ho studiato l'India, il Giappone, la Cina, in riferimento alle antiche tradizioni religiose. Il primo libro che ho letto sulla Cambogia è il saggio scritto da Bruno Dagens, tradotto in italiano da
Giacomo Calderoni (un noto studioso di arte e cultura Khmer)
Ho visto delle bellissime immagini sui templi, la tipica arte khmer, ovvero con le grandi facce scolpite nella pietra, le rovine nella giungla e le grandi radici degli alberi che crescono al di sopra del terreno! è un paesaggio bellissimo. Inoltre i vestiti delle danzatrici sono meravigliosi, eleganti, mistici, femminili! Mi piacerebbe davvero indossarne uno.
Puoi parlarci del tuo paese, la storia antica, magari nel Medioevo? Ho letto che i re, nell'antichità, erano adorati come i faraoni nell'Egitto. Ti ricordi se nell'antica Cambogia la gente praticava la magia e quali Dei e Dee adorasse? Ho trovato un solo nome di un'antica Dea del riso: Po Ino Nogar. Ti ricordi qualcosa? Qui in Europa le Dee che più si avvicinano a Po Ino Nogar sono Demetra (greca) e Cerere (italica)
La Cambogia è una nazione nel sud-est dell'Asia con una popolazione di più di 15 milioni. Al nord-ovest del paese ci sono le rovine di Angkor Wat, un massiccio tempio di pietra costruito durante l'era dell'Impero Khmer. Angkor è uno dei più grandi siti archeologici ancora al centro di attività di scavo.
La Cambogia ha subito un periodo immensamente sfortunato negli anni '70, con il regime di terrore dei Khmer Rossi, periodo che ha visto la morte di 2 milioni di persone: alcuni morirono di carestia, altri perché torturati e giustiziati, fino a che l'invasione vietnamita ha posto fine al regime Khmer nel 1979.
La Cambogia oggi è uno degli Stati più poveri al mondo, con un terzo della popolazione che vive con meno di un dollaro al giorno.
Nel Medioevo il re della Cambogia era Jayavarman II che era adorato come un Dio perché era considerato il fondatore dell'impero Khmer, che dominava gran parte del sud-est asiatico per più di seicento anni.
Jayavarman II fu il re del 9° secolo in Cambogia.
Sì, la gente credeva nella magia o negli Dei nel Medioevo. La praticavano molto, specialmente i soldati che chiedevano di avere una pelle tenace e resistente al fuoco, ai coltelli e cose del genere. La praticavano in modo diverso da come la gente la pratica ora.
Per essere onesti non so nulla sulla Dea Po Ino Nogar, non ho mai letto nulla su di lei, ma penso che tu la possa trovare su Google

7) Un'altra cosa stupenda del tuo paese è l'alfabeto. è interessante, per noi Europei, vedere gli alfabeti asiatici (tra l'altro io adoro anche quello Hindu). Ed è stato interessante sentire il tuo linguaggio! Infatti canti nella tua lingua madre. Hai mai sentito qualcosa cantato in italiano? In Italia abbiamo moltissime band. Hai mai sentito qualcosa dal mio paese? :)
Sì, l'alfabeto è bellissimo, ma non è per niente facile da leggere! Conosco alcune band italiane, e ho sentito i Seven Gates e i Lacuna Coil per alcuni anni; sono grandi, ma cantano solo in inglese. Non ho ancora sentito una canzone cantata nel solo italiano ma ho sentito alcune delle opere liriche. Il linguaggio è bellissimo!
8) Quali sono i vostri prossimi obiettivi? Registrerete un full-lenght? Come sarà?
L'Ep è stato registrato nella mia stanza da letto e il mio prossimo obiettivo è quello di registrare un cd in uno spazio più largo della mia camera da letto. Spero di potere avere più tempo per noi e poter realizzare un nuovo album che sia più pesante dell'EP. Vorrei fare 12 canzoni in un album con molte canzoni veloci, con grandi cori e voglio anche scrivere una o due canzoni in inglese.
9) Puoi parlarci della scena Metal e Rock della Cambogia? Ci sono altre band? Puoi darci qualche nome?
Sai una cosa? In Cambogia le persone non sentono affatto Metal. Il Metal non è popolare in Cambogia e penso che il nostro stile musicale è alquanto nuovo per loro. La gente in Cambogia ama le canzoni d'amore, l'R'N'B, il pop, il soft rock. Spero che un giorno la gente possa aprire il suo cuore all'ascolto di più Rock e Metal.
Ci sono alcune band rock qui, e forse 2 o 3 Metal, ma non sono sicuro, ma posso darti i nomi delle band che ho sentito su YouTube. Sono "Cartoon Emo" e "Animation and Cartoon". Penso che siano molto popolari in Cambogia e ancora attive. Sono di uno stile decisamente differente rispetto al nostro.

1) Hello and welcome on my blog! Can you introduce yourself for our italian readers?
Thanks, Hi my name is Nel (Nelwat Bunchhoeun) and I am guitarist and leader of the band PROR HOK. I am 28 years old and I live in a small town called Mandal. Mandal is a small beautiful city in Norway, and I've lived here for 10 years now. Me and my family moved from Cambodia in 2000 due to a criminal issue at that time and we were refugees and we lived in Thailand for about 5 years before we moved to Norway. I started playing guitar when I was 14 years old and I remember the time my family was poor and I had to save money one year to buy a cheap used acoustic guitar name JOJO. I bought a songbook with chord and began to teach myself. In that time I saw a lot of concert from whatever band on TV just to learn how they performed on stage. While me and my family waiting for the next countries to accept more refugees, I had a Thai band and we called it (BIZZ) with 4 members. We played audition in various nightclubs in Bangkok and eventually a small nightclub hired us. But a few months later, I and my family had to move on and later became the band ended.
2) Why have you chosen "Pror Hok" as the monicker of your band? What is the meaning of this word?
PROR HOK is a name of one of the most popular Cambodian tradition food. It does not smell good at all, but it taste good. Cambodia People love and hate that PROR HOK. We just need to name our band with a single name that no one ever uses it before and we found out that PROR HOK is a good name.
3) On youtube we can listen your songs; I have listened your EP; you play a melodic Metalcore (as Caliban style, in some passages), with a touch of sadness (as The Rasmus style, in my opinion) and a bit of melodic riffs in punk style.
How you label your music style?
My style is a mix of punk, metal and rock. I love melodic metal, but my nephew (Nuth - vocalist) is a big fans of punk / slow rock and the two have different test of music. When we write songs together, we always use the acoustic guitar. I listen first to his vocal part and I write riffs part later. I think it's important to let the vocal part command line because it makes my job easier to write the guitar part later.
4) Can you speak about your lyrics? What are the argoments you talk about?
My lyric talks about the difference between rich and poor, the struggle for life and love song.
5) Have you already play live in Cambogia? And in other countries?
No not yet, because we are not active band at the moment. We're just a garage band and practice sometimes when we have time. We just play music for pleasure. We are very busy with work, school and family. But when the time comes, we will gladly do so.
6) Well, as I have said, I am interesting in Asia's countries! I have read a lots about India, Japan, China, expecially for the ancient religions and Gods or Goddesses. The first book I have read about Cambogia is an essay written by Bruno Dagens, translated into italian by Giacomo Calderoni (a famous italian lover of Khmer culture about Art). Well, I have seen a lots of beautiful images about high temples with big heads in the stone or ruins in the jungle or big tree's roots! It's a beautiful landscape; I really love the typical dancers' dresses, they are wonderful! So elegant, so mystic, so feminine.
I'd really like dress myself with those dresses!
Can you speak about your country, expecially about ancient times, in the Middle Age? I have read something about the cult of the King, seen as a God (symilar to Egypt's ancient culture).
I am interesting in ancient religion too. Do you remember if in ancient times people practice magic or worshipped Gods and Goddesses in Cambogia? I have found the name of the Goddess of the harvest and rice: Po Ino Nogar. Can you speak a bit about Her? Here in Europe, the ancient Goddesses of the harvest and corn were Demeter (in Greece) and Cerere (in Italy).
Cambodia is a Southeast Asian nation with a population of over 15 million. In the country's northwest lie ruins of Angkor Wat, a massive stone temple complex built during the Khmer Empire. Angkor is one of the largest archaeological sites in operation in the world.
Cambodia has had a pretty bad run of luck during the 1970 to suffer the Khmer Rouge's incredibly brutal reign of terror, and up to two million people died, many from exhaustion or starvation, while others were tortured and executed, until an Vietnamese-led invasion ended Khmer Rouge rule in 1979.
Cambodia today is one of the world's poorest countries, with around one third of people living on less than one dollar per day.
in the Middle Age Cambodia had a King name Jayavarman II who often seen as a god because he widely recognized as the founder of the Khmer Empire, which ruled much of the Southeast Asian mainland for more than six hundred years.
King Jayavarman II was a 9th-century king of Cambodia.
Yes they believe in magic or worshipped so much in the middle age. They have practiced a lot especially the soldiers of having tough skin to avoid fire, knife something like that. They practiced in a different way than what people are doing it today.
To be honest I don’t know anything about Goddesses Po Ino Nogar I never read about her but you can find something about her on google for sure.
7) By the way, I have seen the beautiful alphabet too. It's interesting, for our Europeans, seeing Asian alphabets (I love Hindu alphabet too) and it was cool listen your language! In fact, you sing with your own language. Have you ever listened something singed in Italian? In Italy there are a lots of Metal bands; have you ever listened something from my country :) ?
Yes alphabet is beautiful, but I promise you it will not be easy to learn. I know some of the Italian metal band, and I've listened to the band called Seven Gates and Lacuna Coil few years back. They are amazing band, but them sing in English. I've never heard metal song in Italian yet, but I've heard some of operatic singing in Italian. The language is also beautiful.
8) What are your next goals, with your music? Will you record a full lenght? How it will be?
My EP album was recorded sound on my bedroom and my next goal is to record audio on a larger space than bedrooms. I hope we can have a little more time together and make a new album that is heavier than EP album. I want to make at least 12 songs in an album with a lot of fast song with great choruses and I want to write a song or two to sing in English as well.
9) Can you speak about Metal or Rock scene from Cambodia? Are there others bands? Can you give us some names?
You know what? In Cambodia people do not listen to metal at all. Metal is not popular in Cambodia yet and I think that our music style is quite new for them. They love love song, RnB, pop and soft rock song. I just hope one day they open your heart and listen more to rock and metal songs. There are some rock bands out there, and maybe 2 or 3 metal band I'm not so sure, but I can give you the names of two three bands I've heard in youtube. They're Cartoon Emo and Animation and Cartoon. I think they are very famous in Cambodia and I they are all active band. They have slightly different style compared to us.
