Scylla (Black/Viking Metal dall'Irlanda)

1) Ciao e benvenuti! Presentatevi ai nostri lettori!

Ciao vi saluto dall'Irlanda. Sono Sohaib. Suono la batteria nella mia band, Scylla, un gruppo Black/Viking Metal da County Kerry, Irlanda.
Gli altri membri sono Hassan, che suona la chitarra e canta alle lead vocals, e Jack che è alla chitarra (e al basso, per il momento)


2) Scylla: è un nome mitologico. "Scilla" e "Cariddi", una sorta di mostro/abisso. Perché avete scelto questo nome?

Sì, il nome Scylla deriva dalla Mitologia Greca, dall'Odissea, il viaggio di Ulisse, dove lui incontra due mostri, uno chiamato Scilla e l'altro Cariddi, tutte e due posizionati ai lati opposti di uno stretto canale, nelle acque. Se Ulisse avesse cercato di evitare Scilla, si sarebbe mosso per forza verso Cariddi, e viceversa. Sono un appassionato di Mitologia, e l'Odissea è una storia piena di potenza e di fascino, una delle mie preferite, così ho scelto questo nome per la mia band.

3) Suonate un Black Metal sullo stile dei 90's, con un'atmosfera oscura e nebbiosa (sullo stile del primo Burzum ma con un gusto più melodico nei ritornelli). Come definireste il vostro sound? Secondo me, piacerebbe molto ai fans del primo Burzum/Darkthrone/Rotting Christ/Emperor.

Sì, suoniamo Black Metal ma ci piace sperimentare con lo stile, e realizzarlo secondo il nostro gusto personale, così non aspettatevi di ascoltare solo blast beats e tremolo picking nelle canzoni.


4) Potete parlarci della vostra storia? Primi passi e demo...

Gli Scylla sono partiti come un progetto solista nel 2010. Ero solo io agli inizi. Avevo delle idee, e ho deciso di registrare pochi demo. Dopo di questo, ho deciso di formare una band intera, così ho chiesto a mio fratello Hassan, di unirsi a me, suonando la chitarra e occupandosi delle vocals. Uno dei nostri amici,
Jack-Regan Kirwan, ha voluto suonare la chitarra, così si è unito a noi, insieme a Dusko Kovac, un altro nostro amico, che si è offerto di suonare il basso. Abbiamo suonato alcuni shows in quel mese e poi abbiamo deciso di andare nello studio di registrazione e registrare il nostro debut, "Nascency". è stato registrato ai
KDYS studios di John Buggy, in Tralee, con Marty Dineen.
Lo abbiamo registrato nell'estate del 2011 ed è uscito in Aprile 2013. Subito dopo l'uscita dell'album, Jack-Regan e Dusko hanno lasciato la band per motivi personali, e uno dei miei amici, Jack Lucey, ha preso il posto di Jack-Regan alla chitarra. Un altro nostro amico, Stephen White, si è offerto di suonare il basso durante i nostri live, così è stato con noi per un po'. Ora siamo solo io, Hassan e Jack Lucey.

5) Cosa potete dirci delle lyrics di "Nascency"? Di quali argomenti parlate? Mi piace molto l'artwork, con quel paesaggio fantasy oscuro. Il ponte sospeso sull'abisso, quella montagna minacciosa all'orizzonte, il cielo che promette tempesta...

Le nostre lyrics e la musica sono generalmente ispirati dalla mitologia, dall'atmosfera e dalla natura. Con "Nascency",  i temi vertono sulla mitologia infernale e ctonia, anche se l'album non segue una storia precisa (non è un concept) e le canzoni non sono collegate l'una all'altra. Per esempio, la title track
"Nascency" descrive cosa accade a una persona quando muore e discende nell'abisso. Se leggi le lyrics potrai avere un'immagine. Questo è il mio punto di vista su quale inferno vedresti, se potessi visualizzarlo. Altre persone possono avere visioni differenti, ma questa è solo la mia personale prospettiva. L'artwork per l'album è stato curato dal chitarrista Jack Lucey.
Ha molti talenti. Non potevamo chiedere una copertina artistica più azzeccata per rappresentare l'album. L'artwork di "Nascency" racchiude l'intero tema dell'album in una sola figura. è fantastica.


6) Avete già suonato dal vivo?

Sì, abbiamo suonato fin dal 2011. Abbiamo suonato per tutta l'Irlanda, a Dublino, Cork, Limerick, Kerry e una volta a  Roscommon al Philthfest. Stiamo lavorando al nostro secondo album, intitolato "Bloodeagle", e siamo tutti concentrati su questo, per il momento, così non abbiamo una sola occasione di suonare dal vivo in questi mesi. Speriamo di finirlo per questa estate, e di registrare definitivamente il nostro secondo album.


7) Sarebbe bello parlare della scena Black Metal Irlandese.
L'Irlanda è uno dei paesi più esoterici ed occulti al mondo!
Le antiche religioni, gli Dei, le Dee, il culto degli alberi, l'alfabeto Ogam, la stirpe leggendaria dei Thuatha Dé Danann, i paesaggi, il folklore sul piccolo popolo (le fate "Deenee Shee", i leprechaun, i troll, i goblin, le dame del lago...) (*)
Ho letto alcuni antichi poemi presi dalla Letteratura Irlandese.
Potete suggerirci qualche nome interessante tra le band irlandesi?

L'Irlanda ha una forte scena Metal. Molte band sono emerse, e stanno ancora emergendo, dall'Irlanda. Primordial, Cruachan, Celtachor, Eternal Helcaraxe, Altar of Plagues, sono solo pochi nomi. Se vi piace la Mitologia Celtica, dovreste cercare i Celtachor. Raccontano  le leggende degli antichi Dei e Dee, e dei Tuatha de Danann. Stanno registrando il secondo album, "Nuada of the Silver Arm", mentre il primo album si chiama "Nine Waves from the Shore".

(*) Nota di Lunaria: un breve estratto per capire la Mitologia Irlandese: "Le antiche liriche e poesie erano tramandate unicamente per via orale in quanto la più antica forma di scrittura gaelica era l'alfabeto ogamico, complesso e che, comunque, era utilizzato solo dai Druidi in quanto tramandato direttamente dal dio Ogma, divinità dell'eloquenza e collegata, come praticamente tutte la stirpe divina dei Thuatha Dé Danann, al sole, alla solarità, alla luce.
Le sue origini sono però tragiche, egli infatti fu il frutto dello stupro di Eithne da parte del re dei Fomori Elatha - i Fomori, al contrario dei Thuatha Dé Danann, erano le divinità degli inferi, oscure creature maligne dalle fattezze umane ma la pelle scura - i Thuatha Dé Danann, Dei "buoni", collegati alla luce erano creature dalle fattezze umane dalla carnagione molto chiara e tratti nordici (capelli e occhi chiari) e, probabilmente, impersonificavano le popolazioni native gaeliche, provenienti da insediamenti nati dallo spostamento verso Sud dei popoli scandinavi che presero a spostarsi alla ricerca di luoghi meno ostili degli inferni di ghiaccio e neve dell'emisfero nord del mondo.

1) Hello and Welcome here! Please introduce yourself!

Answer: Hello and greetings from Ireland. I'm Sohaib. I play Drums in my band Scylla, A Black/Viking Metal band from County Kerry, Ireland.
The other members of the band are Hassan, who plays guitar and does Lead Vocals and Jack, who plays Lead Guitar (and Bass as well
at the moment).


2) Scylla: It's a mythological name, "Scilla" and "Caribddi", a sort of monster/abyss. Why have you chosen this monicker?

Answer: Yes, the name Scylla comes from Greek Mythology, from Odysseus's Journey, where he encounters two Monsters,
One named Scylla and the other named Charybdis, both on opposite sides of a narrow channel of water.
If Odysseus tried to get away from Scylla, he would move closer to Charybdis, and vice versa.
I am a big fan of Mythology myself and the Odyssey is a powerful story, one of my favourites, so that's why the name was chosen.


3) You play Black Metal (90's old style) with a gloomy, misty
atmosphere (first Burzum's style, with a more melodic touch in the
refrains). How should you call your sound? In my opinion, the fans of first Burzum/Darkthrone/Rotting Christ/Emperor's style can appreciate your work a lot.

Answer: Yes we play Black Metal but we like to experiment with the style a bit and make it our own, so don't expect to hear constant
blast beats and constant tremolo picking throughout the songs.


4) Can you speak about the biography of the band? First steps, demos...

Answer: Scylla began as a solo project in 2010. It was just myself at the start. I had a few ideas and decided to record a few demos. Soon after that, I decided to form a full band so I asked my brother, Hassan, to join on the Guitars and Lead Vocals. One of our Friends, Jack-Regan Kirwan, wanted to play Lead Guitars so he joined the band as well, and another one of our friends, Dusko Kovac, offered his services on bass. We played a few shows over the months and then decided to go to the studio and record our debut album, Nascency. It was recorded in the KDYS studios in Tralee, owned by John Buggy, with Marty Dineen. It was recorded in the summer of 2011 and was released in April 2013. Soon after the release Jack-Regan and Dusko left the band for personal reasons and one of my friends, Jack Lucey, replaced Jack-Regan on Lead Guitars. Another one of
our friends, Stephen White, offered to play bass during our live shows so he was with us for a while. Now it's just myself, Hassan and Jack Lucey in the band.


5) What about your lyrics' themes in "Nascency"? Which are the
argoments you like writing? I really love the artwork too, with that dark fantasy landscape. It's gloomy. The brigde suspended on the abyss, that threatening mountain at the horizon, the stormy sky...

Answer: Our lyrics and music are generally inspired by mythology, atmosphere and nature. With Nascency, the Lyrical theme deals with the mythology of Hell and the underworld, although the album doesn't follow one story (it's not a concept album) and the songs aren't linked.
For example, the title track "Nascency" describes what happens to a person when he/she dies and decends into the abyss. If you read the lyrics you can get a picture of it. That's just my view of what hell would look like if it was seen visually. Other people may have different imagery
but that's just my own perspective of it. The artwork for the album was done by our guitarist Jack Lucey. He's a man of many talents. We couldn't have asked for a better piece of art to represent our album by. The artwork for Nascency captures the whole theme of the album in just one picture. It's amazing.


6) Have you already played live?

Answer: Yes we have been playing live since 2011. We have played across Ireland, in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Kerry and once in Roscommon as well as part of Philthfest. We're currrently working on our second album, titled "Bloodeagle", and all of our focus is on that at the moment, so we haven't had a chance to play live in the last few months. We hope to hit the studio this summer, at some stage, to record the second album.


7) It would be nice speaking about the Black Metal scene from Ireland.
Ireland is one of the most esoteric and occult place in the world!
The ancient religions, the ancient Gods and Goddesses, the trees and
the cult of the trees, Ogam's alphabet, Thuatha Dé Danann's race, the landscape, the folklore about legends and the "little people" (fairies "Deenee Shee", leprechauns, trolls, goblins, ladies of the lake...)... I have read some ancient poems taken from Irish Literature. By the way, can you suggest us some interesting names of new or old Irish bands?

Answer: Ireland has a strong metal scene. Some great bands have emerged, and are still emerging, from Ireland. The likes of Primordial, Cruachan, Celtachor, Eternal Helcaraxe, Altar of Plagues, etc. are only to name a few. If you're into Celtic mythology, you should check out Celtachor.
They tell the tales of the ancient Gods and Goddesses and Tuatha de Danann. They're releasing their second album titled "Nuada of the Silver Arm", a follow up to their first album, "Nine Waves from the Shore".
