1) Ciao e benvenuto! Presentati ai nostri lettori!
Ciao, sono Christian e al momento sono l'unico membro dietro al progetto Al Andalus. Molta gente pensa che siccome suono musica orientale, io sia islamico o arabo, ma - sorpresa! - non lo sono. Sono mezzo tedesco e mezzo spagnolo, e attualmente vivo in Germania. è il mio personale interesse nella cultura e nella storia orientale che mi ha portato a scrivere musica orientale.
2) Al Andalus: è un monicker perfetto per descrivere la tua musica!
Sì, lo è certamente; e per sapere il perchè, bisogna anche sapere cosa "Al Andalus" significhi esattamente: "Al Andalus" originariamente era il nome dello stato islamico medioevale nelle penisola iberica (ora Spagna e Portogallo) e veniva usato per descrivere in generale tutte le regioni della Spagna che venivano controllate dai musulmani tra il 711 e la "Reconquista" nel 1492.
Attualmente il termine "Al Andalus" è conosciuto come sinonimo di multiculturalismo, tolleranza e pace tra le religioni, specialmente tra islamici e cristiani. Così, è quello che sono io: uno spagnolo cristiano che fa musica metal orientale ed "islamica"... questo è quello che è Al Andalus. Si potrebbe pensare che parlare di tolleranza e pace tra islamici e cristiani, sia una manovra con la quale io tenti di esprimere messaggi politici/religiosi, come fanno, per esempio, gli Orphaned Land.
Ma questa non è mai stata la mia ambizione, e non mi è mai piaciuta la musica calata in un contesto politico.
(esclusione fatta per gli Orphaned Land, che fanno un grande lavoro mostrandoci come sia illogico e assurdo l'odio tra le religioni)
3) Puoi parlarci un po' della tua biografia?
Sono cresciuto con la musica classica e sono un fan delle colonne sonore dei film. Così quando ho iniziato a comporre musica, ero molto influenzato dalla musica classica orchestrale. Così, ho passato un periodo nel Symphonic Black Metal, avendo una mia band,
Ashes of Dagoth (Nota di Lunaria: è possibile sentirli su YouTube), dove suonavo le tastiere ed ero il compositore principale. Ma quando ho iniziato ad ascoltare le grande band orientali come Orphaned Land, Narjahanam, (Nota di Lunaria: davvero strepitosi!) Al Namrood o i grandi Scarab, sono stato ispirato dalla scalla pentatonica e dal "Phrygian Mode".
Quello che mi piaceva dei motivi e temi orientali, è che sono incredibilmente catchy, "ti prendono".
Mi piaceva il genere, e così ho deciso di mixare alcune parti orientali sinfoniche alle parti influenzate dal Metal, come le chitarre. Abbiamo iniziato come due membri, ma non abbiamo mai registrato niente. Quando il chitarrista ha lasciato la band, ero solo, e ho cercato di realizzare questo progetto.
Se mi chiedi a cosa assomigli la mia musica, potrei dire che suona come la soundtrack di "Prince of Persia" mixata al Metal, ma in una versione lenta, epica, naive e molto sognante.
4) Su YouTube è possibile sentire le vostre canzoni. Potete descrivere questo album? Penso sia un mix perfetto tra gli antichi suoni arabi e le versioni moderne di Metal...
Bhè, attualmente le canzoni che ho caricato su YouTube sono demo rari delle mie idee e non le considero come un album "fatto e finito". Le ho caricate così come sono, nell'originale, per mostrarle come referenze per alcuni potenziali nuovi membri che potrebbero voler far parte del mio progetto e sono rimasto colpito dall'aver ottenuto così tanta attenzione da tutto il mondo!
Ma è ancora materiale non finito.
Il mio concept di base e scrivere "canzoni narrative". Voglio raccontare storie, ma solo usando il linguaggio musicale, senza vocals, senza lyrics. Come una soundtrack ma senza nessuna immagine già data. L'unica traccia che l'ascoltatore ha è il titolo della canzone e può comunque interpretarla come vuole. Per esempio la nostra canzone "Qurtuba", il titolo ci dice che la principale ispirazione per la canzone è stata la città spagnola di Qurtba, ora Cordoba, capitale del Califfato di Cordoba.
Il nome della città induce subito a pensare alle immagini delle grandi città arabe che abbiamo in mente, ma quello che è capitato di questa città, o in questa città, sta all'ascoltatore deciderlo, mentre ascolta la canzone.
Così, quando il primo album sarà finito, sarà una collezione di storie. Questo è il mio piano, e spero di realizzarlo presto.
5) Avete già suonato live?
No, il mio progetto è da intendersi solo come progetto in Studio.
6) Puoi parlarci della scena Rock del tuo paese?
La Germania ha una delle scene Metal più conosciute; tutti conoscono il Wacken, With Full Force o, l'ultimo arrivato nella scena Pagan Metal, il Paganfest. (Nota di Lunaria: aggiungo anche il Gothik Treffen). è una comunità aperta e noi abbiamo davvero un sacco di grandi band.
7) Prossimi obiettivi?
Al momento, sono molto occupato con la mia band principale Ashes of Dagoth, ma sto cercando nuovi membri per gli Al Andalus perchè sto progettando di registrare le canzoni uploadate su YouTube in una qualità migliore per il nostro primo album. 1) Hello and welcome here! Let's introduce yourself!
Hi, I'm Christian and at the moment the only guy behind Al Andalus. Lot of people think because of my music that I'm a Muslim or an arab guy but - surprise - I'm not. I'm half german, half spanish and I live here in Germany. It was my personal interest in general oriental culture and history and music which bring me to write oriental influenced music
2) Al Andalus: it's perfect for describing your music!
Yes, indeed it is. To know why, you need to know what exactly Al andalus is: Al Andalus was originally the name a medieval islamic state on the Iberian Peninsula (now Spain and Portugal) and its used generally to describe all regions of Spain which were controlled by Muslims between 711 and the Reconquista in 1492. Nowadays Al Andalus is known commonly for multiculturalism, tolerance and peace between religions, especially between Muslims and Christians. So that's what I am...a Spanish Christian making Oriental "Islamic" metal...That's what Al Andalus is all about.
Talking about tolerance and peace between muslims and Christians one could think that I'm trying to spread political/religious messages like for example Orphaned Land does. But this wasn't never my ambition, since I never liked music with political context. (Exception may be Orphaned Land, which do a great job showing us how ilogical and weird the hatred between religions is).
3) Can you describe your biography and your music style?
I was raised musically with classical music and have always been a great fan of all types of movie scores. So, when I began writing music I was clearly influenced by classical orchestra music. So I got into Symphonic Black Metal and started the band Ashes of Dagoth, where I'm Keyboarder and main composer. But when I began listening to great Oriental Bands like Orphaned Land, Narjahanam, Al Namrood or the great Scarab I was inspired by the Pentatonic scale and Phrygian Mode. What I like about many oriental motives and themes is, that they are incredibly catchy. I liked that and decided to mix "oriental" sounding orchestra parts with metal influenced guitar parts. We started as two members, but never recorded anything. Since our guitarist left the band I'm alone trying to realize this project. If you asked me what my music sounds like I would say its "Prince of Persia Soundtrack meets metal", but in a slow, epic, naive and dreamy way.
4) On YouTube we can listen your songs. Can you describe this album?
I think it's a perfect mix about the ancient arabic sounds, and the modern ways in Metal...
Well, actually the songs I uploaded Youtube are raw Demos of my ideas and I do not consider them as album or finished release. I uploaded them originally in order to show them as reference to some potential new Band Members and in the end I was suprised to get relatively much atention from all over the world. But it's all unfinished material.
My basic concept is to write "narrative" Songs, I want to tell stories just using the musical language, without vocals, without lyrics. Like a soundtrack but without any given images. The only clue the listener gets is the song's title and may later on interpret the music like he want. For example our song Qurtuba. The title tells us, that the main inspiration for this song has been the spanish City Qurtuba (nowadays Cordoba), capital of the Califate of Cordoba. The name of the citiy induces immediatly images of great arab Cities in our mind, but what is happening to this citiy or in this city is up to the listener while listening to the song. So when the first album is finished it will be a collection of stories. That's my plan and I hope to realize it soon.
5) Have you already play live?
No, the project is intended just as Studio Project.
6) Speak about the rock/music music scene from your country.
Well...Germany has one of the best known metal scenes on the world. Everybody knows Wacken, With Full Force or, at least inside the Paganmetal-scene, the Paganfest. It's a friendly and open community and we had here always since the beginning tons of really great bands.
7) Next goals?
At the moment I'm really busy with my main band Ashes of Dagoth, but I'm looking for new Bandmembers for Al Andalus because I'm planning to record the Youtube songs and new songs in an appropriate quality for our first album. So wish me good luck!
